Most rooms at home don't have the best ventilation, especially if you keep your windows closed at all times. Bedrooms are especially susceptible to catching lingering smells as we rarely open up our private bedrooms, yet we tend to spend the majority of our time in the room.

A musty-smelling room is often an indication of mold growth, so a thorough home cleaning is essential to remove the source of these smells. There are a few home remedies you can do to deodorize a room, however, which you can easily do at home. Here are ten ways you can get rid of those room odors!

10 Ways to Deodorize Your Room

There are two types of smells that can infiltrate your room: lingering and fleeting smells. Lingering ones are smells that are musty, smokey, or sulfuric as the odor is coming from a source in your room, such as mold, mildew, bacteria, body fluids, or furniture that caught these smells.

Fleeting smells are those that pass by, but will not permanently linger in your room, such as: smoke from passing cars, the damp rain smell, pet odors, bathroom smells, and more. These can usually be masked with candles, essential oils, and other scents.

Scented Candles

Fleeting smells, like the smoke of a passing car, the smell of rain, or other non-lingering odors can be masked with a scented candle of your choice. Scented candles are made with essential oils, which gives off a strong, lasting scent that can mask other fleeting odors. The heat of the candle may also cause odors to dissipate, and scented candles provide a calming ambiance.

Air Fresheners

Commercial air fresheners can be used in place of candles if you're worried about the open flame. Grab an air freshener spray, or a solid wax air freshener to hang around your room. These will mask any odors that come from fleeting sources, as well as any smells from dirty laundry, sweaty sheets, or bathroom smells. Beware, however, of the smells combining together.

Room Spray

A room spray is often made with alcohol, and works well to deodorize and refresh a room at the same time. Spray the solution around your room, and let the bad smells dissipate as the room spray dries. You'll be left with a pleasant-smelling room that is also sanitized! A room spray works great to remove sweat smells,  too!

White Vinegar Spray

Vinegar may not have the most pleasant smell, but it works to deodorize surfaces. Vinegar is your top choice for removing musty smells, as the solution kills off mold spores that cause these odors. Mix equal amounts of water and vinegar in a spray bottle, and liberally apply the solution around areas where the musty smell is most concentrated. Let the area dry.

Vodka Spray

Vodka has a high alcohol content, which makes it perfect to use as a disinfectant as well as a deodorizer. Spray pure vodka on your room furniture, curtains, and carpets to kill off bacteria, and to dissipate any smells emitted by these microorganisms. Use vodka on damp areas to prevent these from becoming a breeding ground for bacteria and mold growth.

Baking Soda

Baking soda can be used dry or dissolved in water to absorb odors, and get rid of bad smells for good. Sprinkle baking soda on heavy furniture: your mattress, sofa, chairs, and carpets, and let the powder sit for at least an hour. Spray baking soda dissolved in water on curtains, clothes, bedding, and covers to easily deodorize them. Vacuum up the excess baking soda.

Activated Charcoal

Like baking soda, activated charcoal can be used to absorb any bad odors from your room. However, you do not sprinkle or spray charcoal, and instead keep a container of charcoal around your room to deodorize any odors in the air. The activated charcoal will absorb the smells, neutralize them, and clear your room of any odor. Change the charcoal once a month.

Air Purifier

An air purifier uses air filters to remove the odors from your room. The filters have microscopic, semi-permeable layers where air particles can pass through, but odor particles cannot. The device will improve your indoor air quality as well. An air purifier is one of the best odor absorbers, but requires some maintenance and cleaning every now and then.

Home Cleanup

Sometimes, the problem is with the cleanliness of your room. Do you have food containers and plates lying around? If your garbage disposal is emitting odors around your whole house? Or perhaps the room smell is caused by cigarette smoke from the discarded ends around your room? Do a thorough cleanup, and the smell should lessen if not dissipate.

Deep Cleaning

For those strong smells that you can't pinpoint the source, go for a full deep cleaning of your upholstery, furniture, and fabrics. Ensure you have proper ventilation and fresh air before you do any sort of cleaning, and it is best to hire a professional to deep clean heavy furniture. Deep cleaning should remove the odors once and for all!
