Quartz countertops are perfect to use in commercial settings when compared to other natural stones such as marble and granite. Quartz countertops offer the same aesthetic value but without the high maintenance of other stones. Natural quartz is also much more durable, stain resistant, non-porous, and ranks higher on the hardness scale compared to other stones.

However, like most surfaces, quartz countertops can be riddled with dirt and germs that can make the surface look unkempt. Knowing how to disinfect quartz countertops properly helps to keep the surface clean, and kill any bacteria that may be lingering on the quartz surface.

Just because quartz is a lower maintenance material compared to other stones does not mean it isn't susceptible to damage from harsh chemicals and abrasive scrubbers. Quartz countertops can still get stains, but are generally easy to remove with the right cleaning solutions.

What You’ll Need

  • Mild soap or dish soap
  • Rubbing alcohol (70% concentration)
  • Spray bottle
  • Sponge
  • Soft cloth
  • Old towels or soft rag

How to Disinfect Quartz Countertops

Step 1: Cleaning the Quartz Countertops

The first step in cleaning quartz countertops is to remove the surface dirt and debris. Mix together 2-3 tablespoons of mild dish or castile soap and 2 cups of warm water in a spray bottle. Use this solution to clear the accumulated dust on the surface, and remove any stains that may be on your countertop. Use a sponge to wipe down the surface with this soap solution.

Step 2: Drying Quartz Surfaces

Take a dry cloth and use it to remove the excess moisture from the surface of your quartz countertops. Let the stone dry completely before you disinfect it for the disinfecting solution to work at its optimal capacity. Don't forget to clean and dry the sides, the legs, and underneath the counters as well.

Step 3: Disinfecting Quartz Surfaces

Use some regular rubbing alcohol at 70% concentration to disinfect the surface. Pour the disinfectant on an old but clean towel or rag, and use it to apply the solution onto your quartz countertop. Allow the solution to stay on the surface, and let it dry completely before using the countertop.

How to Keep Quartz Countertops Clean

Avoid Acidic or Abrasive Substances

Most commercial cleaners, like drain cleaners, bleach-based cleaners and oven cleaner solutions, are often too harsh for use on natural stones, including quartz. These solutions can eat away at the surface polish, and etch the surface of the stone.

Common highly-acidic solutions, like vinegar and lemon juice, may also etch the surface, leading to offputting, cloudy-white patches that are rough to the touch. Abrasive tools like steel wool and scouring sponges, on the other hand, can open up scratches on quartz, and create starting points for damage.

Avoid using these cleaners and tools on your quartz countertops to ensure that they are kept clean and damage-free. There are plenty of stone-safe cleaners on the market that you can use instead, as well as castile soap which is highly alkaline and suitable for natural stone materials.

Clean Regularly

The best way to keep your quartz surface clean is to clean them regularly. Give your countertops a good wipe down, especially if you're in an industry where cleanliness is vital: such as restaurants, cafes, bars, and medical offices. The same goes for offices, which need to be neat and tidy to keep a professional-looking space.

Keep a bottle of cleaning solution by your countertops for a convenient reach whenever you need to clean the surface. Have a paper towel dispenser handy for a quick clean, and wipe down your countertops whenever there are spills, dust accumulation, or when you simply want to refresh the surface. Put your countertops on your daily cleaning routine.

Disinfect with Mild Solutions

Harsh chemical solutions may remove stubborn stains, but they can also eat away at the material. Isopropyl alcohol is mild enough to disinfect your quartz countertops without damaging them, while still killing off the majority of the germs and bacteria. You may also use a multi-surface disinfectant as long as it is non-acidic and deemed stone safe, like Stone Care and Granite Gold branded cleaners.
