Ever wonder how to calculate the electricity usage of your air conditioner?

Whether you’re on the hunt for a new aircon unit or just wondering how you can lower down your electricity bill, getting the correct aircon power consumption is very important.

In this guide, we’ll show you the fast and simple process of computing for one!

How to Calculate Your Air Conditioner Power Consumption

To get the correct electricity usage of your air conditioner, you will need to first base it on the unit’s type. Is it a standard window air conditioner? A split inverter machine? Perhaps a central air conditioning system?

For comparison, single room air conditioners of different sizes use 500 to 1500 watts. The average central aircon system, on the other hand, will use about 3000 to 5000 watts in electricity.

Once that’s settled, it’s time to compute your aircon’s energy consumption! Here's how:

  1. To calculate the power or electricity cost of your air conditioner, multiply the electricity consumption or the per kilowatt hour (kWh) by the tariff rate (e.g. 20 cents/kWh).
  2. To get the energy consumption (kWh), simply multiply the appliance wattage (kW or W) by the number of hours you use.
  3. For example, if you are using a 300W air conditioner for 4 hours per day, then you are consuming about 1200Wh or 1.2kWh per day. In one month, the consumption cost will be 1.2kWh x 30 days x 0.20 $/kWh) = $7.20.

Importance of Knowing Your Electricity Usage

Getting the right electricity usage for your air conditioner is very important as it can help you monitor and maintain your desired power consumption every month. The result? A well-performing, energy efficient aircon unit and an electricity bill that doesn’t electrocute your wallet!
